This 10 minute documentary depicts the rituals and ceremonies of the Sisterhood, a religious sect of women descended from Brazilian slaves. The video explores the rites and celebrations of the Sisterhood and the amalgamation of Catholic and African beliefs through a specific observance, the celebration of Our Lady of the Good Death. This celebration is the Sisterhood's annual commemoration of the Holy Mother's death and assumption into heaven, and is characterized by both rites and ceremonies performed in honor of Mary as well as a large street celebration.
The Sisterhood was a collaboration between photographer Jane Tuckerman and myself in 2001. Jane was responsible for the videography, and I served as the editor.
